As part of the Cairo Night event, the Egyptian sound artist and electronic musician Nour Emam, a.k.a. Nur, teams up with the versatile Swiss musicians Janiv Oron (DJ with Goldfinger Brothers) and Michael Anklin (UFO drummer). Islam Chipsy and his band bring the sounds from the streets of Cairo to Basel: Shaabi music is wild Egyptian street pop that is played at vibrant wedding parties and family fiestas. Similar to Omar Souleyman, Islam Chipsy plays the latest form of Electro Shaabi at weddings and in clubs and, flanked by two drummers, the keyboard virtuoso presents his electrifying music to a worldwide audience. In addition to the electronic live act 3Phaz from Cairo, there will be a chance to see the MC and producer Rozzma, who releases his bass-heavy tracks on the renowned Parisian label Acid Arab Records. The circle is completed by the Basel-based producer Phil Battiekh, who has been kicking up a storm in the Egyptian underground and at international electronic festivals with his heavy bass and raw auto-tune sound.

CROSSROADS is a collaboration between the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperations (SDC) in cooperation with the partner institutions Kaserne Basel, Antigel Festival Geneva and the Center for African Studies at the University of Basel.

«Masr! Egyptian club night» and «Mzantsi! South African club night» are co-produced by festival Antigel Geneva, SHAP SHAP and Kaserne Basel, co-curated with CUSS and Mahmoud Refat and take place in the framework of CROSSROADS.
