Kiriakos Hadjiioannou (BS/GR), Fabrice Mazliah (CH) & Ensemble Modern (DE) «Hyperion / Higher States, Part 2»

In his longing for a sublime world, Hölderlin’s early Romantic character Hyperion wavers between manic-depressive and hallucinatory-euphoric states. Hyperion’s attempts to harmonically unite art and beauty, the gods, nature, love and revolution are doomed to failure – Hölderlin’s work stands for a contradictory and ultimately disappointing project of modernity. A fatigued Hyperion retreats into nature in order to write his epistolary novel from there. His philhellenic air, with Greek antiquity as his ideal, raises questions regarding the construction of Western heritage and its impasses: Against the background of a country ruined by the economic crisis Hyperion’s hymns of praise sound almost ironic and insipid today. This material serves as the starting point for the collaboration between the two choreographers Kiriakos Hadjiioannou and Fabrice Mazliah with Ensemble Modern, one of the leading ensembles of New Music. Based on Hölderlin’s epistolary novel, the ensemble’s musical score seeks to move the bodies on stage and to transfer the colour and the sound of this historical work into our present time marked by disillusion, urgency, rebellion and escapism.

Kiriakos Hadjiioannou receives the June Johnson Dance Prize 2017 from the Federal Office of Culture (BAK) and the Stanley Thomas Johnson Foundation for "Hyperion / Higher States, Part 2".
